Woman dies after being found ‘lying on the ground in distress’ on U of I campus, no foul play suspected

University police say a person called 911 early Tuesday morning after finding a woman who was "lying on the ground in distress."

URBANA — A woman who was found on the University of Illinois campus requiring medical help died Tuesday.

University police officers responded to the 1000 block of Dorner Drive in Urbana near Pennsylvania Avenue around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, according to a news release from the University of Illinois Police Department. The department responded after a person who called 911 said that the “woman was lying on the ground in distress.”

The woman was then taken to a local hospital, where she later died.  Police said there was no foul play involved, and there is no ongoing threat to the campus community at this time. No other details have been released.

In a separate incident last month, a man later identified as Alex C. Rodriguez, 29, was found dead near the Alma Mater statue on campus. Police said that “no foul play” was detected in that death either.

An autopsy by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office was scheduled last week.  Rodriguez was not affiliated with the university.
