WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court has rejected a lawsuit backed by President Donald Trump to overturn Joe Biden’s election victory, ending a desperate attempt to get legal issues rejected by state and federal judges before the nation’s highest court. Trump had called the lawsuit filed by Texas against Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin “the big one.” The court’s order Friday was its second this week rebuffing Republican requests that it get involved in the 2020 election outcome. The justices turned away an appeal from Pennsylvania Republicans on Tuesday. The Electoral College meets Monday to formally elect Biden as the next president. – Associated Press

URBANA – The incoming member of the 15th congressional district is joining two other members of congress from Illinois in backing a legal brief to overturn the presidential election.
On Friday, GOP representative-elect Mary Miller said she supports efforts by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Earlier this week, Paxton sued to invalidate the election results of Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. All four battleground states were won by Democratic President-elect Joe Biden.
More than half of House Republicans, including their top two leaders, are backing the lawsuit in an extraordinary display of the party’s willingness to subvert the will of voters. Seventeen Republican attorneys general and 126 members of Congress have joined Texas in urging the U.S. Supreme Court to throw out millions of votes in four battleground states based on baseless claims of fraud.
Besides Miller, the Illinois Republicans include Rep. Mike Bost from southern Illinois and Rep. Darin LaHood of Peoria. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy of California and Minority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana on Friday signed onto a brief backing the longshot bid.
Most courts have thrown out claims of fraud by lawyers for President Donald J. Trump. US Attorney General William Barr says there was no evidence of widespread fraud in the November election.
The case demonstrates Trump’s remarkable political power even even as he spreads false claims that many Democrats and others fear risk deeply damaging democracy.
