Millions of Illinoisians may run into issues getting food as the ongoing federal government shutdown is putting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in jeopardy.

The Trump administration previously said funding for SNAP would lapse on Nov. 1 if the shutdown did not end before then. The administration said those who use EBT cards would not have money added to their accounts in November.

Several state governments, including Illinois, sued the administration, arguing there are emergency contingency funds to backfill SNAP funding.

The administration initially announced it would only provide food assistance payments at half the amount people usually receive after an order from a federal judge. A judge subsequently ordered the Trump administration to pay SNAP benefits in full by Friday.

Close to two million people in Illinois receive benefits from SNAP, including over 28,000 in Champaign County.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has said the state has limited options to close the gap. Pritzker signed an executive order to direct $20 million to food banks across the state.
