URBANA – Food and building service workers at the University of Illinois may strike as soon as Sunday.
In a mass e-mail to staff and students, Senior Associate Chancellor for Human Resources Shari Mickey-Boggs said they would prioritize essential dining services, cleaning bathrooms and taking out trash during the potential strike.
Mickey-Boggs said they have reached a good-faith agreement with union leadership twice that was aligned with the market, but union members voted down the potential contracts.
Service Employees International Union Local 73 said the university was offering less than a dollar hourly raise in the new contract, while custodians and dining hall workers are working extra with record student enrollment.
The university said they have scheduled six more bargaining sessions, starting Thursday, Sept. 26.
