RANTOUL — The Village of Rantoul is working to rectify an error that showed an increase on residents’ property tax bills.

In a Facebook post, the village said the rate listed on residents’ current property tax bills is incorrectly listed as $1.8525, which is applied to every $100 in a property’s taxable value. The village said the tax rate should be $1.1514.

Based on the formula for calculating property taxes, the incorrect rate means residents who owned a $100,000 home would be asked to pay about $234 more on their tax bill this year.

Officials discovered the error after it had already finalized and sent out the tax bills. The village said Rantoul taxpayers will need to pay the amount listed on their tax bills, but they will be reimbursed for the difference to ensure they only paid the intended rate.

“We understand this creates confusion and inconvenience, and we sincerely apologize,” the village wrote. “The Village is committed to making this right.”

Rantoul is working with the Champaign County Clerk’s Office and Treasurer’s Office to calculate reimbursements and distribute the refunds.

The village said residents who have questions can contact Village Administrator Scott Eisenhauer’s office at 217-892-6801.
