NEWTON COUNTY, Ind. — The body of a slain sheriff’s deputy from Newton County, Indiana was escorted earlier this week from Urbana to Springfield and from Springfield to Brookston, Indiana Thursday.
Corporal Brandon Schreiber was shot in the line of duty on September 1 while assisting Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department in Illinois. A police chase that ended in Sheldon led to an exchange of gunfire after which the suspect, Andrew Roselius, 37 of Clifton, Ill. was pronounced dead, according to Illinois State Police.
Newton County Sheriff Shannon Cothran expressed his gratitude to the public during this difficult time.
“I cannot even begin to explain the feeling that overcame so many of us to see the people line the streets as we came through Iroquois County, IL and every community through Indiana,” he said in a statement posted on Facebook.
“To see adults standing at the roadside wiping tears from their faces as we passed and their heartfelt reactions was a testament to the respect that Corporal Schreiber inspired and reminds us of the humanity that binds us all and keeps us going.”
Schreiber is an organ donor. He was initially taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital but was then admitted to the Carle Trauma Center in Urbana, where he was in critical condition.
The sheriff’s office has not yet released details on funeral arrangements.
