US SENATE
CHICAGO — A former Chicago-area sheriff has emerged from a crowded Illinois Republican primary field to mount a long-shot challenge to U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin. Mark Curran, Lake County’s former sheriff who had perhaps the most name recognition of all the candidates, said he ran because the political climate had changed and he believes Durbin is vulnerable in November. Durbin is the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate and was first elected in 1996 and has handily won each election since then. He’s also extremely well funded with $4.5 million cash on hand. – Associated Press

CHICAGO — The Chicago area’s top prosecutor, who was haunted by questions about the Jussie Smollett case, has won the Democratic nomination for another term. The primary vote in the Democratic territory all but guarantees Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s re-election in November against two lesser-known Republicans. Foxx faced an expensive challenge from three Democrats who emphasized her office’s controversial decision to drop charges against Smollett, who’s accused of staging a racist, anti-gay attack. Foxx acknowledged missteps, but faced questions on whether she acted improperly in recusing herself and dismissing charges. Her challengers included a first-time candidate with millions in family wealth. – Associated Press
