Dozens of municipal races were on the ballot in Champaign County Tuesday night. County Clerk Aaron Ammons’ office said it expects several mail-in votes will continue to arrive in the coming days.

That leaves several races where the vote tallies are too close to call as the margins may shift.

Five candidates are currently in the lead to win seats on the Champaign Unit 4 Board of Education. Those include Fatima Ahmed, Justin Michael Hendrix, Christy Arnold, Tony Bruno and Grace Kang.

Champaign voters appear to have rejected a proposal to fund Strides, the county’s only low-barrier shelter.

Several mayor and village president competitions were also on the ballot. In Rantoul’s mayoral race, incumbent Chuck Smith is currently down by a margin of six votes to District 5 Trustee Samuel Hall III.

Voters in Savoy have likely reelected incumbent Village President John Brown. Brown has received 70% of the vote so far against his opponent, Village Trustee Jan Carter Niccum.

Results are tight in the race for a western district of the Champaign City Council. Incumbent District 3 council member Jamar Brown currently has fewer votes in his favor than his challenger, Shauna Clayborn. All other council races were uncontested.

Under Illinois law, mail-in ballots that have been postmarked by Election Day can be counted if they are received within two weeks. Official state election results will be certified towards the end of April.
