WEATHER ALERT: Severe storms expected late this afternoon and evening

Some Central Illinois schools will close Friday due to heat

Champaign Unit 4 Schools field.

URBANA – Due to forecasted high temperatures on Friday, August 25, some central Illinois schools will be closed. The National Weather Service in Lincoln has issued an Extreme Heat Warning. Combined heat and humidity will make it feel like 110-115 degrees. Here are the August 25 school closures or advisories:

Danville School District 118

  • All schools will be closed on Friday, August 25.

Champaign Unit 4 Schools

  • Centennial High School and Edison Middle School will not have classes because the cooling systems are not working. Other schools in Unit 4 will be open.
  • Additionally, all yellow school bus services are canceled Friday, August 25. 
  • The Central versus Normal West varsity football game scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. has been rescheduled for 8:00 p.m. 

Urbana School District 116

  • All schools in the district will be open on Friday, August 25.
  • Parents are encouraged to send a refillable water bottle to school with their students.
  • The district will offer water to student who ride yellow school buses after school.
  • Parents are encouraged to pick their children up from school if they usually walk home or ride the yellow school bus home.

State Senator Rose says the U of I favors its Chicago campus over Urbana when allocating state funds

State Senator Chapin Rose says the University of Illinois is not being fair to its flagship campus when it distributes state funds. Rose, who is a U of I Urbana alum, says his calculations show that the university is giving its Chicago campus more state money on a per-undergraduate basis than it gives to its Chicago campus: $10,073 per student at Chicago versus $7,483 per student at Urbana, for a difference of $2,590 per student in the Chicago campus’ favor.
