URBANA — Former Urbana City Council member Chaundra Bishop has died.
Mayor DeShawn Williams announced her passing during Monday’s council meeting and asked for a moment of silence in her honor. Williams did not state the cause of her death.
Bishop represented Ward 5, which includes much of northeast Urbana. She was first elected to the council in 2021 and was reelected in 2025.
Bishop resigned from her position in April, citing health issues.
Fellow council member Chris Evans offered his condolences to Bishop’s family.
“Chaundra Bishop was one of the … is one of the strongest people I’ve ever met, and she will be missed,” he said during the meeting.
Council member Maryalice Wu echoed similar sentiments.
“I was very sad to hear the news of Chaundra,” she said. “She was a wonderful city council member, but she was a wonderful person and my condolences to her family.”
