URBANA — The city of Urbana has a new fire chief. The Urbana City Council voted Monday to appoint Steven Doggett to the position.

Doggett previously served with the Urbana Fire Department for 19 years, including as an arson investigator, the city said in an announcement.

He represented employees for seven years as president of the local chapter of the International Association of Fire Fighters and has served as a field staff instructor at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute.

He was also a police officer for the Village of Westville as well as a firefighter at the New Port Chemical Depot in New Port Indiana.

Doggett told the council he appreciates the opportunity and is proud of the fire department’s high standards.

“I’m excited to see where we can go and how we can continue to improve public safety in this community,” he said.

Doggett will take over the position from Urbana’s interim fire chief, Tal Prendergast, who has been serving in the role since December.
