CHAMPAIGN — Starting this week after Memorial Day, drivers may need some extra time to drive through the I-74 I-57 interchange in west Champaign.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said it will close the ramp from eastbound I-74 to northbound I-57 for one month staring on Tuesday as well as the westbound I-74 to northbound I-57 ramp and the I-57 to Olympian Drive ramp, according to a news release.

IDOT will close the ramp from northbound I-57 to westbound I-74 for a month starting June 2. Other ramp closures will occur at the interchange over the next few months in the summer.

These closures come on the tail end of the quarter-billion dollar upgrade project, which is expected to be mostly completed by the end of this year.

IDOT is encouraging drivers to allow for extra time when traveling in the area and to consider using of alternate routes. Drivers are also urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using cell phones and be alert for workers and equipment.

Several more ramp closures are scheduled throughout the rest of the summer months.

Repairs for County Road 100E bridge over Interstate 74, just west of Fithian in Vermilion County, also began on Tuesday.
