Juvenile suspect in custody following fatal shooting in Champaign outside Market Place Shopping Mall

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign Police Department has arrested a juvenile suspect following the fatal shooting incident on Saturday outside the Market Place Shopping Mall.

The department said in a news release a 15-year-old was taken into custody on an initial warrant of Apprehension for Aggravated Battery with a Firearm. After the victim died from their injuries, police said they forwarded the case to the office of the Champaign County State’s Attorney for homicide-related charges.

As required by state law, the suspect’s identity is not being released since they are a juvenile.  

The police department said the incident remains an ongoing investigation.


CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police are looking for the person who fatally shot a 16-year-old boy in the parking lot of Market Place Shopping Mall.

Officers responded to a fight outside the Dick’s House of Sport store Saturday around 6:14 p.m., according to a news release. Police say during the fight, the teenager was struck after at least one individual discharged a firearm.

The Champaign County Coroner identified the victim as Jaylen Bailey of Champaign. He was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

No arrests in the case have been made so far. Both the Champaign Police Department and Champaign County Coroner are investigating the death.
