After nearly five days of testimony, state Sen. Emil Jones III’s federal corruption trial appeared to be nearing its end Tuesday afternoon — until the senator unexpectedly took the witness stand.
“The main thing: Take care of my intern,” Jones, D-Chicago, told Omar Maani as the pair dined at a Chicago steakhouse in July 2019. “That’s it.”

In recordings the jury will hear Thursday, Jones allegedly agreed to limit his legislation in exchange for the $5,000 and the job for his intern, according to the feds.
Jones has remained in office since his September 2022 indictment on three counts including bribery and lying to the FBI, even winning another four-year term in an unopposed race six weeks after being charged.
