Police are investigating the death of a Rantoul teenager whose body was found in rural Champaign County.
The Champaign County Coroner’s office said the body of Elias A. Smith, 17, was found Monday at 11:30 a.m. in a flooded drainage ditch in Condit Township, west of Rantoul.
The spot was about a mile from where Smith’s vehicle had gone off a country road into the ditch on Saturday, according to a news release from the Champaign County Sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s department had reported over the weekend the vehicle was found submerged in water without its driver.
The sheriff’s department is continuing to investigate the accident. The cause of Elias Smith’s death is unknown at this time as autopsy results are pending.
