Police investigate shots fired in Campustown

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois issued several Illini-Alert Emergency messages after shots were reportedly fired late Monday night. There are no indications anyone has been injured.

At 11:36 p.m., an alert said the person responsible for the shots is believed to have left the area and people could continue regular activities.

The first alert went out Monday at 10:46 p.m. It asked people to avoid the area of Second and Green Streets in Champaign as police investigated shots fired. Subsequent alerts asked people to stay out of the area as police investigated. No other information has been released.

Campustown is in a part of Champaign where there are many private apartments, bars, restaurants and other businesses catering to University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana students.

In October 2022, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign police took over patrolling the area from Champaign police, which were understaffed at the time.

In July 2022, Joshua Berg of Urbana was fatally shot near Second and Green Street in Campustown.
