CHAMPAIGN – Police and firefighters are trying to find out why a Champaign house exploded and caught fire. No one was injured in the incident.
Firefighters responded to the residence in the 2700 block of Judith Drive around noon on Sunday.
Neighbors and the family of the man who owned the house believe no one was in the building at the time of the explosion. The resident is believed to be currently living in a nursing home.
Cynthia Brockman lives across the street from the house that exploded.

“We just heard the explosion. It was really loud. It shook our house, excuse me, knocked stuff off our walls. Very scary, very loud,” said Brockman.
In a press release, the Champaign Fire Department said firefighters arrived to find the house fully collapsed and engulfed in fire. Two neighboring homes also received damage.
The investigation is underway. IPM news crews on the scene monitored multiple Ameren Natural Gas trucks on scene as well as firefighter and police units.
Two hours after the explosion, Brockman said she’s still a little rattled.
“I’m calming down now. I was a little shook up. I had my grandkids here and they were a little frightened,” said Brockman.
