Funeral Service And Procession Confirmed For Champaign Officer

CHAMPAIGN – A police officer killed in the line of duty will be laid to rest on Wednesday according to the Champaign Police Department.

Officer Chris Oberheim was shot on May 19 during an apartment complex shootout. A second officer, Jeffrey Creel, was wounded by the alleged suspect as the officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance. The suspect killed in the shootout, 24-year-old Darion Marquise Lafayette of Champaign, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Champaign police say a funeral service will take place Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Maranatha Assembly of God, located at 555 West Imboden Drive in Decatur. There will be overflow parking at Rotary Park at 2450 US 51 in Decatur.

Following the service, there will be a funeral procession starting around 1:30 p.m. to the Monticello Cemetery.  The procession route is expected to include I-72 and IL 48. The public can line the funeral route to the procession. However, the funeral service and internment are closed to the public.
