Fighting Illini Women beats Nebraska 77-68; Illinois sets program record with eight straight Big Ten wins

CHAMPAIGN — Senior guard Adalia McKenzie had 23 points, eight rebounds and four steals against Nebraska. Illinois beat Nebraska 77-68 on Sunday extending the team’s win streak against Big Ten opponents to eight.

This win sets a new program record for most consecutive wins against Big Ten opponents.

Takeaways

Nebraska: They heavily relied on center Alexis Markowski who had 28 points and eight rebounds. No other Cornhusker was able to get into double figures and was held to only six threes. 

Illinois: Four Illinois players were in double figures and went 15 of 22 for 68% from the free throw line. Illinois is still running with a short roster because of injuries. Head coach Shauna Green ran a seven-woman rotation. 

Key moment

After a back-and-forth first half, Illinois went on an 18 to 7 run in the third quarter. McKenzie scored seven points in that run and got Illinois leading by eight heading into the fourth quarter.

Key stat

Kendall Bostic contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds bringing her closer to the record for most career double-doubles at Illinois. She will need two more double-doubles to break Jenna Smith’s record that was set in 2010.

Illinois will travel out west and look to upset No. 1 UCLA on Thursday night, while Nebraska will host Oregon on Wednesday night.
