URBANA – DeShawn Williams was sworn in as the first Black mayor of Urbana on Saturday.

“I’m deeply honored to be the first African American to hold this position, but let me be clear, while I may be the first, it is my duty to ensure that I’m not the last,” said Williams to loud cheers.

Williams is a banker and former Champaign County Treasurer. He will officially take office after the Urbana City Council meeting on May 5.

The ceremony at Lincoln Square Mall included residents in the audience. It was also attended by Champaign Mayor Deb Feinen and 13th Congressional District Rep. Nikki Budzinski (D).

Williams discussed his goals to make Urbana more inclusive for the youth and underprivileged communities.

“Public safety begins with community. It begins with neighborhoods knowing each other, caring for each other and being on one accord,” said Williams.

Williams defeated Annie Adams for the seat in February.

He succeeds Diane Wolfe Marlin, who decided not to run for re-election after serving two terms as mayor.
