DANVILLE—A cluster of signposts in downtown Danville is getting a makeover thanks to a $12,000 grant from the Illinois Arts Council.

The city of Danville said in a news release it will use the funds to restore the Lindley Sign Post Forest at the corner of Harrison and Vermilion Streets. It features 87 signs pointing to towns and destinations around the world.

The Sign Post Forest is named for Carl Lindley, an Army G.I. who erected a sign pointing to his home town of Danville while working on the Alaska Highway in Canada’s Yukon Territory in 1942.

After 16 years of exposure to the elements, each sign will be restored or replaced and set up in a new layout with an ADA-accessible bench.

The city said it hopes to create “a welcoming place for residents and visitors to sit, reflect, and honor Mr. Lindley’s story and the connection we all share with the places we call home.”

The restoration is expected to be complete by next spring.
