Champaign Unit 4 school board to finalize Superintendent Shelia Boozer’s departure

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign Unit 4 Board of Education plans to vote on a separation agreement Thursday with Superintendent Shelia Boozer.

Another administrator, Executive Director of Facilities and Services Dan Casillas, would be appointed acting superintendent, according to the meeting agenda.

The school board was divided over Boozer’s tenure for two years before the election last month. In April, voters elected a majority that support replacing her as superintendent.

Several community members in recent meetings have urged the board not to replace Boozer, who is the first Black female superintendent for the district including Charlisa Hart.

“The decision could set back academic progress for all students, redirect focus away from priorities such as teaching and learning, delay progress in the upcoming CFT, CESP [union] negotiations, and ultimately increase financial burden on the district,” she stated at the May 15 meeting.

Board of Education President Tony Bruno declined to comment on personnel issues, but said Thursday’s agenda describes exactly what they will be voting on.

After the election, Bruno said he would “find a superintendent who can bring us into a brighter future and deliver on the expectations that all parents should have for their children.”

Boozer declined IPM News’ request for an interview as well.
