CHAMPAIGN – Firefighters and staff from the Champaign Fire Department and Neighborhood Services Department along with the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance are offering a free public service this week.
They will be going door-to-door in a north Champaign neighborhood on October 25 offering to check smoke alarms and installing free smoke alarms in homes that need them, according to news release from the City of Champaign.
The Smoke Alarm Blitz will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will include approximately 30 homes within the boundaries of Garwood Street to the south, Market Street to the east, the dead-ends to the north and Walnut Street to the west.
The Champaign Fire Department says that smoke alarms should be tested once a month and replaced after 10 years.
