URBANA – A longtime eatery in Urbana announced that it is closed temporarily due to structural issues in the building.
In a statement posted to Facebook earlier this week, Courier Cafe said there is an issue with the brick facade on the south side of the building.
The cafe owners have met with contractors and city officials and “are waiting for an assessment by a structural engineer to determine the scope and severity of the problem,” according to the latest update.
This building is one of the oldest in the area. It was originally designed in 1903 by Joseph Royer and was home to The Urbana Courier newspaper for over 70 years.
“We’re doing our best to preserve the long-standing traditions of The Courier Cafe and this building,” the cafe owners said. “There are ‘pain points’ involved with a historic location but we believe that preserving our local history is important.”
