After losing its last two games, Illinois (6-3, 3-3) brought itself back in the win column with a 35-13 victory against Rutgers University (4-5, 1-5). This was Illinois’ first home win against Rutgers since 2019. The win makes Illinois officially eligible for a bowl game.
Takeaways
Illinois: Right out the gate, Illinois established its run game and dominated Rutgers on the ground. In the first half, Illinois rushed for 132 yards, setting up senior quarterback Luke Altmyer to throw three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. As the final buzzer rang, Illinois had a total of 445 offensive yards and 210 rushing yards.
Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights struggled early on as the Illini’s defense only allowed two field goals to be scored in the first half. By the time Rutgers were able to make it a one-point game, their defense allowed Illinois to make big yardage plays and score 28 points in a row. Rutgers has now lost five out of its last six games.
Key moment
After the second half kickoff, Illinois marched down the field with short run plays and a 17-yard pass from Altmyer to junior receiver Justin Bowick. After a five-yard run, Illinois was 20 yards away from extending to a three possession lead. Altmyer dropped back to pass and threw the ball to the endzone, positioning it where only junior receiver Hudson Clement could catch it. The 75-yard drive and 20-yard touchdown was Clement’s first touchdown of the season and his for the Illini.
Key stat
After struggling the past two games, Altmyer threw for a season high of four passing touchdowns and 88 rushing yards. This is the most rushing yards by Altmyer since his 100 yard performance two years ago against Wisconsin.
