DANVILLE — Youngsters interested in studying insects in the field have an opportunity to take part in an upcoming hands-on learning experience.

The Vermilion County Conservation District is hosting a workshop at Kennekuk County Park in Danville focused on dragonflies that are native to Illinois. The program is sponsored by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and is primarily geared towards children in grades 6-10, but it can be adjusted for other grade levels, according to a news release.

Participants can get involved in field work and lab studies. There will also be discussions about identifying dragonflies and understanding their life history and behaviors. The program is offered through IDNR’s Environment and Nature Training Institute for Conservation Education.

Teachers and educators are also invited to attend, and classroom resources including books and other materials will be provided, according to the conversation district.

Those interested in participating are required to pre-register at the IDNR website. Registration costs $11 per person, and the workshop will be held June 27 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
