URBANA — The City of Urbana and city council members are mourning the loss of former council member Chaundra Bishop.

The city released a statement on Wednesday paying tribute to Bishop. According to the city, she was diagnosed in 2016 with stage 4 intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of cancer in the liver.

“Most people would understand if someone stepped back. Chaundra kept finding ways to step forward,” the city said.  “She continued serving. She continued advocating. She continued caring about others, even while carrying more than most of us could imagine.”

Urbana Mayor DeShawn Williams announced Bishop’s passing during Monday’s council meeting and asked for a moment of silence in her honor.

Bishop represented Ward 5, which includes much of northeast Urbana. She was first elected to the council in 2021 and was reelected in 2025.

She resigned from her position in April, citing health issues.

Fellow council member Chris Evans offered his condolences to Bishop’s family.

“Chaundra Bishop was one of the … is one of the strongest people I’ve ever met, and she will be missed,” he said during the meeting.

Council member Maryalice Wu echoed similar sentiments.

“I was very sad to hear the news of Chaundra,” she said. “She was a wonderful city council member, but she was a wonderful person and my condolences to her family.”
