URBANA — Urbana City Council member Chaundra Bishop has resigned, citing ongoing health issues that require her full attention.

Bishop represented Ward 5, which includes much of northeast Urbana. During Monday’s council meeting, she spoke virtually and read from a letter thanking the city for its trust.

“Serving in this role has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” she said. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated council members and city staff, and to serve the residents of Urbana.”

Bishop was first elected to the council in 2021 and was reelected in 2025.

Multiple city officials wished Bishop well and said they were grateful to have work alongside her.

“You’ve had a lasting impact on the city of Urbana through your service, the alternative response, the BerryDunn report and much of the things that have involved improving the police department were through you,” Ward 2 Council Member Chris Evans said. “I want to thank you very much for your service on our city council.”

The city is expected to take applications from residents hoping to complete Bishop’s term as Ward 5 council member.
